Is India Keeping Up?

Motivation

Not long ago, the big AI labs in the US and China released a new model every four to six months. In 2026 that has dropped to about a month, and sometimes less. Part of the reason is that these labs now use their own models to help build the next ones: writing code, fixing training runs and checking results. So each new model brings the next one sooner.

India has made a real start. Our first big homegrown models came out in early 2026, and through the IndiaAI Mission, tens of thousands of GPUs are now open to builders at low cost. But we started far behind, the money going into AI here is still small next to the US and China, and we release far fewer models. When everyone else keeps getting faster, even steady progress means the gap gets wider every month.

I made this site to track that gap in simple numbers: how many models each country releases, and how often. I hope it helps more people see where we stand, and why moving faster matters.
